Alex and Joan were guests at a wedding I photographed last December, and when Joan called me to book me for her boho backyard wedding in Miami, I got allllll the heart eyes! She gushed about the macrame details, baby’s breath in her hair, and her lace two-piece wedding dress. Everything about this backyard wedding was carefully planned to highlight their love story – right down to the colors their guests wore!
I love when couples bend and break traditions, and Alex and Joan are no different. Their ceremony, flanked only by their two best friends as their wedding party, happened in the same spot as their reception. Guests sat at their assigned table and everyone had a great view. Instead of a unity candle or sand ceremony, Alex and Joan watered a small tree to symbolize their new life as husband and wife.
And it’s not a Miami wedding without a Cuban cigar roller! Set up right next to Juju Booth photo booth, guests had an amazing time celebrating the new Mr & Mrs.
Usually when you hear “backyard wedding” you think “intimate” – and while it certainly felt intimate, Alex and Joan hosted close to 150 guests at this home but it still felt special.
Here are some of my favorites from their Miami backyard wedding:
